A oração ao anjo da guarda antes de dormir é uma das práticas mais antigas e queridas da vida devocional católica. Este artigo explora suas raízes bíblicas, formas tradicionais e como torná-la uma prática noturna viva.

The Scriptural Basis for Guardian Angels

Jesus himself affirmed the existence of guardian angels: "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father" (Matthew 18:10). Psalm 91:11 promises: "He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." Hebrews 1:14 describes angels as "ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation."

The Classic Guardian Angel Prayer

The traditional prayer, dating to at least the 17th century in its current form, reads: "Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day (night) be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen." Each phrase carries theological weight: "God's love commits me" — the angel is not a personal possession but a gift of divine care.

Why Pray to Angels Before Sleep?

Sleep has always been associated with vulnerability — the unconscious hours when we are least defended. The nighttime guardian angel prayer is an act of surrender: placing oneself under divine protection before entering the most helpless hours of human existence. The Church Fathers saw sleep as a rehearsal for death — and thus as a moment requiring spiritual preparation.

Making It a Living Practice

For children, the guardian angel prayer is often the first memorized prayer and can become a lifelong anchor. For adults, enriching the prayer with brief silent listening — a moment to notice what the angel may be pressing upon the heart — transforms it from formula to encounter. Some add: a brief examination of conscience, gratitude for the day's protection, and a specific intention for the night.
