Que dit Peniel Mean? The Biblical Signification of Jacob's Encounter with Dieu

Peniel means

Versets clés

Genesis 32:28

"Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed."

Genesis 32:30

"So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."

The Night of Wrestling (Genesis 32:22-32)

On the eve of his terrifying reunion with Esau, Jacob was alone. A "man" wrestled with him until daybreak. Jacob refused to let go without a blessing. The man dislocated his hip yet Jacob persisted. This is not a dream — it is a physical, costly, all-night encounter.

The Name Change: Israel

"Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed" (32:28). Jacob means "supplanter" — one who grabs and schemes. Israel means "he struggles with God" or "God strives." The name change marks a transformation of character and destiny.

Peniel: Face of God

"So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved" (32:30). To see God's face was to expect death (Exodus 33:20). Jacob's survival is grace. The limp he carries for the rest of his life is the mark of a man who met God and was changed.

Applications for Today

True encounters with God always leave a mark. The blessing Jacob received came through the wound. Our deepest transformations often come not in comfort but in the dark nights of wrestling — when we refuse to let go of God until He blesses us.

Réflexion

What dark night of wrestling with God has left a mark on you — and what blessing came through that struggle?
