Understanding Death in Wisdom Literature

The Reality of Death

Ecclesiastes 3:2: "A time to be born, and a time to die." Death is part of God's ordained order, It comes to all people, It marks the end of earthly life, It is not the end of existence.

Hebrews 9:27: "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." One death appointed, Judgment follows death, Eternal destiny determined, Preparation is essential.

Sheol in the Old Testament

What Is Sheol? The Hebrew word Sheol appears 65 times in the Old Testament, It refers to the realm of the dead, It is not necessarily a place of punishment, It is where all dead go (both righteous and wicked in OT understanding).

Key Passages: Psalm 16:10 - "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell [Sheol]", Psalm 49:15 - "God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave [Sheol]", Proverbs 15:24 - "The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell [Sheol] beneath."

Proverbs on Death

Victory Over Death

1 Corinthians 15:54-55: "So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?"

John 11:25-26: "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." Jesus is the resurrection, Believers live even though they die, Eternal life for believers, Death is not the end.

Hope Beyond Death

2 Timothy 1:10: "But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel." Christ abolished death, Life and immortality revealed, Through the gospel, Hope is certain.

Revelation 21:4: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." No more death, No more sorrow, No more pain, All things made new.
