Unger Biblical Demonology: A Core Analysis

Merrill Unger Biblical Demonology (1952) remains one of the most seminal evangelical works on the spirit world, grounding spiritual warfare theology strictly in Scripture against both superstition and skepticism.

The Reality of the Spirit World

Unger argues demons are not folklore but objective reality—fallen angels who joined Satan in rebellion. They possess intellect, will, and emotion. The demonic world is not chaotic but organized: principalities, powers, rulers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Satan is the god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4) and demons are his foot soldiers whose goal is to blind unbelievers and harass believers.

Possession vs Influence

Unger distinguishes possession (daimonizomai: direct internal control) from oppression. A true believer indwelt by the Holy Spirit cannot be inhabited by a demon—light and darkness cannot cohabit. However believers in unrepentant sin can experience severe demonic oppression, opening doors through willful disobedience.

Principles of Spiritual Warfare

Victory is in the finished work of Christ not in shouting or rituals (Colossians 2:15). Satan is a defeated foe. The authority of the believer is delegated not inherent. The primary defense is holy living. The Armor of God (Ephesians 6) is essentially putting on the character of Christ: Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Faith, Salvation, and the Word.

Balanced Approach

Unger warns against demon fever—seeing a demon behind every problem—but equally against ignoring spiritual battle. Most afflictions are natural. But believers must remain alert to genuine spiritual attack and equipped to respond with the authority Christ has delegated to them through His name and His Word.

Key Verses

  • Ephesians 6:12 — Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world.
  • Colossians 2:15 — Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
  • James 4:7 — Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
