Strength in Exhaustion: Isaiah 40:28-31

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles. Isaiah is addressing exiles who feel abandoned by God. The answer is a theology of God's inexhaustible nature: He does not grow tired. The renewal of strength is connected to waiting — the Hebrew qavah means to hope actively, to expect, to bind oneself to God in trust.

Strength Through Christ: Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. The context is crucial: Paul has just said he has learned the secret of contentment in all circumstances — in abundance and in need (4:11-12). All things means all circumstances of life, not all feats of achievement. The strength Christ provides is not a success guarantee but the inner capacity to face any condition without being undone by it. This is a verse about endurance and contentment, not a prosperity promise.

Strength in Spiritual Warfare: Ephesians 6:10

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. The passive imperative be strong (endunamousthe) means be strengthened — it is received, not generated. Paul immediately connects it to putting on the full armor of God. Spiritual strength is not willpower but alignment with God's resources: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word.

Strength in Weakness: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Paul received this word when asking God to remove a thorn in the flesh. God's answer was not removal but a paradox: divine power operates most fully precisely where human capacity fails. Paul's response is one of the most counterintuitive statements in Scripture: I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Biblical strength is not the elimination of weakness but the presence of Christ in the midst of it.
