Bible Verses About Money and Wealth: What Scripture Really Says About Finances

The Bible mentions money more than almost any other topic. From the tithe to the love of money, from the parable of the talents to the prosperity gospel debate — a comprehensive guide to biblical financial wisdom.

The Root of All Evil? 1 Timothy 6:6-10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. (1 Timothy 6:10). Note the precise wording: not money itself but the love of money. Money is morally neutral; the heart's relationship to it is not. Paul's contrast is godliness with contentment, which he calls great gain (6:6). Hebrews 13:5 adds the anchor: Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.

Proverbs on Money: Wisdom, Diligence, and Generosity

Proverbs presents a balanced, practical theology of money: diligence produces wealth (10:4; 12:11) but wealth does not guarantee security (11:28; 18:11). Proverbs 11:24-25 captures the generosity paradox: One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Proverbs 22:7 warns about debt: the borrower is the slave of the lender.

The Parable of the Talents and Faithful Stewardship

Matthew 25:14-30 presents believers as stewards, not owners — the master entrusts resources and expects a return. The servant who buried his talent out of fear was rebuked; faithful investment was rewarded. Luke 16:10-13 adds: One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much. Integrity with money is a test of character for larger responsibilities.

Generosity as Worship: 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. The cheerful giver (hilaron in Greek) gives out of abundance of heart, not legal obligation. Generosity is not payment to God but participation in His own character.
