Bible Verses About Identity in Christ: Who You Are According to Scripture
The Bible offers a comprehensive answer to the question who am I — grounded not in achievement or approval but in what God has declared about those who are in Christ.
You Are a Child of God: John 1:12 and Romans 8:15-17
To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12). Paul deepens this in Romans 8:15-17: you received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, Abba! Father! Identity as a child of God is not aspirational — it is declared status grounded in adoption by the Father.
You Are a New Creation: 2 Corinthians 5:17
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Identity in Christ is not a goal to achieve but a reality to live from. The new creation identity does not cancel history but redefines its meaning.
You Are Loved and Chosen: Ephesians 1:3-6
God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. The basis of Christian identity is the eternal, pre-temporal choice of God — not anything we contributed. You are loved with a love that predates your existence and does not depend on your performance.
Living From Identity Rather Than For It
The most common spiritual disease is identity anxiety — trying to establish worth through performance. Galatians 2:20 describes the antidote: It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. Living from identity means bringing what is already true about you in Christ to each situation, rather than trying to earn it.
