Prayer to Guardian Angel Before Sleep
Traditional Catholic Nighttime Prayer for Angel Protection
Table of Contents
1. Introduction: Guardian Angels in Catholic Faith
The belief in guardian angels is deeply rooted in Catholic tradition and Scripture. According to Catholic teaching, each person is assigned a guardian angel at birth—a heavenly protector who guides, watches over, and intercedes for us throughout our lives. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession" (CCC 336).
Praying to one's guardian angel before sleep is a cherished Catholic tradition. As we enter the vulnerability of sleep, we entrust ourselves to God's care through the ministry of our angelic guardian. This prayer provides comfort, protection, and a peaceful transition into rest.
- Protection through the night: Asking for watchful care during vulnerable sleep hours
- Peaceful rest: Inviting angelic presence to calm anxious thoughts
- Spiritual discipline: Building a consistent prayer habit before sleep
- Relationship building: Developing awareness of your guardian angel's presence
- Family tradition: Passing down faith practices to children
2. The Traditional Prayer (Angel of God)
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God's love commits me here,
Ever this day, be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
Origin: Traditional Catholic prayer, 12th century attribution
When to pray: Before sleep, upon waking, or anytime you seek protection
Indulgence: Partial indulgence granted when prayed devoutly
"Angel of God, my guardian dear" - Acknowledges the angel as God's messenger and personal guardian, emphasizing the intimate relationship.
"To whom God's love commits me here" - Recognizes that the angel's care is an expression of God's love and trust.
"Ever this day, be at my side" - Requests constant companionship and presence.
"To light and guard, to rule and guide" - Four specific requests: illumination (light), protection (guard), direction (rule), and counsel (guide).
3. Latin Version: Angelus Custodes
Angele Dei, qui custos es mei,
Me, tibi commissum pietate superna,
Illumina, custodi, rege et guberna.
Amen.
Literal translation: Angel of God, who are my guardian, me, committed to you by heavenly piety, illuminate, guard, rule, and govern. Amen.
"See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."
— Matthew 18:10 (NABRE)4. Incorporating into Bedtime Routine
A consistent nighttime prayer routine helps transition from daily activity to peaceful rest. Consider this sequence:
- Examination of conscience: Briefly reflect on the day—acknowledge blessings and shortcomings
- Act of contrition: Express sorrow for sins and receive God's forgiveness
- Guardian Angel prayer: Recite the Angel of God prayer with intention
- Additional prayers: Our Father, Hail Mary, or other nighttime prayers
- Moment of silence: Rest quietly, aware of God's and your angel's presence
- Sign of the Cross: Make the sign of the cross before settling to sleep
- Same time nightly: Pray at a consistent time to build habit
- Prayer corner: Designate a specific spot for nighttime prayers
- Prayer card: Keep a printed prayer card by your bedside
- Phone reminder: Set a gentle reminder 30 minutes before desired prayer time
- Family prayer: Pray together as a family when possible
- Start small: Begin with just the Guardian Angel prayer, add more over time
5. Teaching Children This Prayer
Children have a natural affinity for guardian angels. This prayer is often one of the first prayers children learn. Here's a simple version for young children:
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God's love commits me here,
Ever this day, be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
- Start early: Children as young as 2-3 can learn simple prayers
- Use visuals: Show children images of guardian angels
- Explain simply: "God gave you a special angel to keep you safe"
- Pray together: Model the prayer by saying it with your child nightly
- Make it routine: Include it in the bedtime sequence (bath, pajamas, prayer, bed)
- Share stories: Read age-appropriate guardian angel stories
- Encourage conversation: Let children talk to their guardian angel in their own words
October 2nd is the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels in the Catholic Church. This is an excellent day to:
- Teach children about guardian angels
- Renew devotion to your guardian angel
- Learn more about angelology from the Catechism
- Share family traditions related to guardian angels
6. Biblical Foundation
"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone."
— Psalm 91:11-12 (NABRE)"Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?"
— Hebrews 1:14 (NABRE)"Peter said to her, 'You are out of your mind.' But she insisted that it was so. They said, 'It is his angel.'"
— Acts 12:15 (NABRE)These passages, among others, provide biblical foundation for belief in guardian angels. The Old Testament speaks of angels protecting God's people, while the New Testament reveals angels as ministering spirits serving those who will inherit salvation.
7. Additional Nighttime Prayers
O Lord, God Almighty, grant that I may pass this night in peace.
Protect me from all evil and keep me safe under Your care.
Let Your holy angels watch over me as I sleep,
And grant me restful sleep for the service of Your glory.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Visit, we beseech You, O Lord, this dwelling,
and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy;
let Your holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace;
and may Your blessing be upon us always.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
- How did I experience God's presence today?
- When did I feel my guardian angel's guidance?
- What am I grateful for from this day?
- What worries can I release to God before sleep?
- How can I serve God better tomorrow?
When anxiety keeps you awake, pray the Guardian Angel prayer slowly. Focus on each phrase. Imagine your angel's peaceful presence beside you.
Make this a family prayer. Parents and children pray together, creating shared spiritual memories and consistent faith practice.
When sleeping away from home, this prayer provides comfort. Your guardian angel travels with you—home is wherever God's angels are present.
During sickness, pray this prayer for healing and comfort. Ask your guardian angel to intercede for restoration of health.
"The angel is always with you, always beside you, always watching over you. Never forget this heavenly companion."
