Is It Biblical to Cremate? A Christian Guide to Cremation and Burial

The Bible does not forbid cremation or require burial for salvation. God raises the dead by His power regardless of remains. Burial is the dominant biblical pattern, but cremation is widely regarded as Christian liberty when chosen with reverence.

What Scripture Clearly Teaches

The body matters in biblical Christianity — God created humans as embodied beings, Christ rose bodily (Luke 24:39), and believers bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). But resurrection does not depend on intact remains: the sea gives up its dead (Revelation 20:13) and what is sown is not the body that will be raised (1 Corinthians 15:37). Hope rests on God's promise, not the chemistry of what remains.

Cremation vs. Burial in the Bible

Burial is the dominant pattern — Abraham buried Sarah, Jacob and Joseph were buried with care, Jesus was buried in a tomb. Burial expresses honor and hope. Cremation appears rarely, often in contexts of judgment or crisis. Amos 2:1 condemns violent desecration of an enemy's bones, not reverent cremation. Genesis 3:19 describes human mortality, not funeral method. Descriptive passages are not automatically prescriptive.

Christian Traditions

Catholics permit cremation when it does not reject Christian doctrine and remains are treated reverently. Orthodox churches generally prefer burial. Most Protestants allow cremation as Christian liberty, urging Christ-centered funerals. The unifying confession is: I believe in the resurrection of the body — regardless of the method of disposition.

How to Decide With a Clear Conscience

Ask: Is the choice based on stewardship and family circumstances, or denial of resurrection? Will it create unnecessary conflict? If cremation is chosen, treat the body and remains respectfully. The center of a Christian funeral is not method but message — Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. This hope can be proclaimed at burial or cremation alike.
