Biblical Reasons to Support Israel: A Comprehensive Christian Perspective

An in-depth examination of the biblical covenantal foundations for Christian support of Israel — including the Abrahamic covenant, the land promises, Paul's teaching in Romans 9-11, and major eschatological perspectives.

The Abrahamic Covenant: An Unconditional Foundation

Genesis 12:1-3 records God's call to Abram with five distinct promises: land, nationhood, personal blessing, protection, and universal reach — in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Genesis 17:7-8 reinforces that this covenant is everlasting. Critically, the covenant was unilateral — ratified by God alone passing between the pieces while Abram slept (Genesis 15:12-17). Israel's disobedience can bring discipline but cannot annul what God unconditionally swore. Paul explicitly argues in Galatians 3:17-18 that the law cannot nullify the prior covenant promise.

The Land Promise: Fulfilled, Ongoing, or Spiritualized?

Three major Christian interpretive positions exist on the land promise. Dispensationalists hold that the physical land promise to Abraham's physical descendants remains in force and awaits complete fulfillment in the millennial kingdom. Covenant theologians tend to see the land as a type fulfilled in Christ and the new creation. Progressive dispensationalists seek a middle position, affirming a future role for ethnic Israel without rigid distinctions. Each position carries weight, and Christians of genuine faith hold all three.

Romans 9-11: God Has Not Rejected His People

Paul's sustained argument in Romans 9-11 is essential for any Christian position on Israel. He opens Romans 11 with a categorical denial: Has God rejected his people? By no means! Paul himself, a descendant of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin, is proof that God has not abandoned Israel. He describes a present remnant chosen by grace (11:5) and anticipates a future day when all Israel will be saved (11:26). The image of the olive tree (11:17-24) warns Gentile believers against arrogance: they are grafted in; the natural branches can be grafted back.

Practical Christian Response: Prayer, Support, and Balance

'Christians are called to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6) — not as a political statement but as an act of covenant fidelity. Support for the Jewish people is consistent with Paul's instruction that Gentile believers owe a debt to Israel through whom the gospel came (Romans 15:27). At the same time, support for Israel does not require endorsement of every policy action. A biblical view loves the Jewish people with covenant faithfulness and a longing for their salvation through Jesus the Messiah.

Key Verses

  • Romans 11:26 — And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob.
  • Psalm 122:6 — Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they be secure who love you!
