1 Thessalonians 4:13

"I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope."

1 Thessalonians 4:14

"For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus."

Comfort, Not Prohibition

Paul does not forbid grief — he transforms it. "Do not grieve as others who have no hope" (4:13). Christians mourn, but with resurrection hope. The loss is real; the comfort is equally real.

The Foundation: Christ Died and Rose

"For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus" (4:14). Our hope is not wishful thinking but is anchored in the historical resurrection of Christ.

Those Who Sleep in Jesus

Sleep is Paul's metaphor for the death of believers — not annihilation but rest, awaiting resurrection. They are "in Jesus" — safe in Him. Death cannot separate them from Christ or from us permanently.

Applications for Today

When you grieve the loss of a believer, remember: their death is not the final word. The same God who raised Jesus will raise them. Grieve, but with the tears of hope, not despair.

本周反思

How does the certainty of resurrection change the way you grieve the loss of a fellow believer?
