Overview: Grace

Grace is God's free and abundant gift to the unworthy, most fully manifested in Christ's redemptive work in the New Testament. Salvation is not by works and merit, but by grace through faith. Therefore all boasting belongs to God. Grace is not license to sin, but delivers us from sin's dominion, bringing us into a state of life that is renewed in the Holy Spirit and willingly obedient.

Key Scriptures

  • Ephesians 2:8-9for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.
  • 2 Corinthians 12:9He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
  • Titus 2:11-12For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world;
  • John 1:16From his fullness we all received grace upon grace.
