Jesus Genealogy and Family Tree: A Biblical Analysis
The New Testament gives two genealogies for Jesus that diverge after David. Understanding their different purposes and what they say about Jesus earthly family unlocks rich theological insights about His identity.
Is Joseph Jesus Father?
No, not biologically. Both Matthew and Luke record that Mary conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit before she and Joseph consummated their marriage (Matthew 1:18, Luke 1:35). Joseph is Jesus adoptive or legal father. By naming the child Joseph formally acknowledged Him, granting Jesus full legal rights as a son of David—the royal lineage needed for Messianic credentials.
Matthew: The Royal Legal Line
Matthew writes to Jews to prove Jesus is King. His genealogy traces Abraham to David to Solomon to Joseph. It includes Jeconiah whose bloodline was cursed (Jeremiah 22:30). By being Joseph legal not biological son, Jesus inherits the royal title without the blood curse—a theologically precise solution.
Luke: The Biological Line
Luke traces David to Nathan rather than Solomon down to Heli then Joseph. Since Joseph father in Matthew is Jacob, many scholars conclude Luke traces Mary lineage—calling Joseph son of Heli as son-in-law per Jewish custom. This gives Jesus biological descent from David through Mary, fulfilling the prophecy of the seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15).
The Brothers and Sisters of Jesus
Mark 6:3 names James, Joses, Juda, and Simon as brothers. Three views exist: Protestant holds these are biological half-siblings of Jesus born to Mary and Joseph after His birth. Catholic tradition holds they were step-siblings from a prior marriage of Joseph. A third view identifies them as cousins. James became leader of the Jerusalem church and wrote the Epistle of James after his post-resurrection conversion.
